The concept of freedom of speech has gained a prominence in the communication world. Every human must have the right of expression. Today, public spaces are a great platform for a person to express his or her identity. Public spaces are places where everyone is welcome and is free to express their identity. There are a variety of public spaces like streets, malls and cinemas where people have the chance to express themselves. A person must possess potential communication skills to express his or her identity.

On December 1992, a male resident lodged a complaint against the limitations of the McIvers Baths, an ocean pool in Sydney, Australia which was open to children under 12 years and women of the locality. The complaint also received opposition as the case was based on sex discrimination. The reasons were that opening the place for men might lead to many cases mainly, sexual harassment. To extent the lodged complaint was at the right, but on the other side there are many conditions that lead to exclusion. These cases must be on the struggle to get inclusion in the public, rather than taking actions and raising issues for competency.

Public spaces are places where one can freely express their identity. The resident of McIvers Baths, had his own right to lodge a complaint. The scenario was reflecting discrimination though it was a public place, but with restrictions. It is necessary to follow the ethical code of conduct and limitations. As per the concept of public spaces, the person has the right to express any obligation. One can express an identity in such a place applying the concept of humanity and equality. The act of restricting McIvers Baths as a public space for males relflected discirimintation and they must have been provided with opportunities to utilize the place as an expression platform, under certain rules and standards(Iveson, 2003, pp.215-226)..

In Newcastle public spaces skateboarding is considered as a transgressive activity. Some places are open for this activity whereas, the others are restricted. Such activities are considered as the ones violating rules and regulations. These activities were categorized into “good” and “bad” activities. They can be 'in' or 'out' for some places, depending on the scenario (Nolan, 2003, pp. 320).

From the youth perspective, it is a good and attractive activity to express their identity and popularity. The public space where permitted can be utilized for such activities without any issues. On the other hand creating a bad impact or annoying factor among the people can be a negative part as skating on such places might create disturbance and distraction for others. Else apart that, it must be used as a platform for the youth to express themselves. Skateboarding is a recreational activity for the youth and in this age, teenagers seek fame and recognitions so, they should be encouraged under certain rules and regulations to positively utilize such public spaces (Nolan, 2003, pp. 311-326).
