Tribute to Sojourner Truth

What is the title of the film you picked?

The film which I have chosen for this assignment is a documentary called Tribute to Sojourner Truth. It is a documentary about a brave courageous woman who was born into slavery and subsequently sold again into slavery. Sojourner lived a courageous life of hard times.

Why did you pick this film over the others offered?

The film is about Sojourner Truth who was born into slavery in New York State. Sojourner Truth was freed in 1827, leaving her with her two young children to fend for herself, working whatever domestic jobs she could find. She discovered religion and preached her opinions, both religious and political, to her church, on the street, and at local gatherings. Her early years as a slave also compelled her to speak out against slavery and later, about women's rights. Even though, not educated and could not read and write, she became highly respected and regarded as one of the distinguished speakers through the northeastern section of the United States.

What is/are the central message(s) of this documentary/fictional film? Be specific. Use examples from the film to support your choice.

I loved learning that she used the courts to her advantage, especially at a time when the courts were even more racist and sexist than they are now.

Consider the effectiveness of the film for this history class. What are its strengths and weaknesses of this film in documenting history?
