“Every Little thing She Does is Magic” by The Police (1981)

Originally written by Sting in the latter half of 1976, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic was a runaway success. Performed and recorded in 1981 by the icons, The Police, the track can even be heard on the soundtrack of Police Academy and has quite literally not gone out of date. It can still be heard on the radio from time to time and has even been featured in recent media productions. The song has truly left its mark on the music industry.

Sting invited Jean Roussel to play the keyboards on the track against the wishes of other band mates. At the time, the band believed that the individual would not be able to do justice to the lyrics and would not be able to aid in the musical process either. The song contains standard verses, a catchy chorus and a bridge. The arrangement were to be analyzed by itself, it would not stand out in a crowd of other pop singles. Put everything together and The Police, quite literally, had a classic on their hands. Despite the band being comprised of three guitarists, the actual song contains much more to it than just a tune on the guitar. It consists of a beautiful mixture of acoustic piano, layer upon layer and four very distinctly different parts.

The vocals were put down in a unique manner, not fairly common in the era the song was released in. The double vocals are overlapped by the drum beats and it never gives off the notion that the song is too “busy”.
