Gain of Vestibulo-ocular Reflex

The vestibulo-ocular reflex facilitates an individual in maintaining a gaze which is directed despite of head motion. For instance, a player who is chasing down a ball which is in the air is able to maintain his eyes alert on the ball even though his head keeps on bobbing. In the space due to the weightlessness, the vestibulo-ocular reflex does not work well, leading to a slip of the visual image on the retina of eye. The symptom of this state can be sickness due to the motion.

The space life sciences experiment was intended to assess the vestibulo-ocular reflex and the quantity of the image slip. For this purpose, Marc Garneau did it many times which took ten minutes, to perceive whether he was become accustomed with the weightlessness while the mission was on.

Firstly, a cloth cross is placed by the Marc Garneau which measures about one meter by one meter that is three feet by three feet on the mid deck lockers. In addition to this, the arms of the cloth cross were patented to point to right, left, down and up points by the side of every arm were number from zero at the middle as zero was the cross point to 20 at the last part.

Headband is used to wear to grasp a pen sized; narrow beam flash light, Marc Garneau faced the cross and strapped himself into place in the middeck. It is also pointed out that the beam of flashlight was at the middle of the cross cloth and focused on having the eyes stable on that similar point. Marc Garneau then protect the eyes with the paper and did a quick head progress at the same time as trying to keep the way of his gaze towards the zero. Moreover, when Marc Garneau detached the paper, he saw whether the eyes were still focused on the zero or the direction of eyes have sifted/ moved. Marc Garneau also checked how distant the beam of flashlight and his head had moved where he documented the results.

Chinese and German scientists conduct 17 experiments in the spacecraft Shenzhou-8

The spaceship Shenzhou-8 uninhabited carries on board equipment with which the Chinese and German scientists will conduct joint experiments in life sciences. The successful docking between Shenzhou-8 and the laboratory module Tiangong-1, 17 experiments in life sciences will be conducted on board with this equipment, ten Chinese projects, six German projects and a project jointly developed between the two countries.
