Introduction

Static Routing

In static routing the discovering of routes and propagating them through a network is done by an administrator. In static routing, the routers incorporate a manually configured routing entry instead of using the information obtained from the dynamic routing protocol for forwarding the traffic. The static routine differs from the dynamic routing in the way as in static routing the routes are fixed and do not vary if the network is adjusted or reconfigured. The static routing method is applied in the routers to enhance the efficiency and give backups in the event when the information from the dynamic routine gets failed to be exchanged. Once the device is configured, the static routing forwards packets out the preset ports but concerning the topology of the network there will be no communication among the routers. This process is convenient for small networks having less redundancy. However, this process has many disadvantages when maintain IP routing tables.

Static routes are primarily used in simple network topologies. However circumstances occur where static routing would seem to be attractive. Static routing can be use to describe a default route manually in order to direct the traffic forward when there is no specific route to destination in the routine table. Static routine can also be employed to describe a particular routine which is not routinely broadcasted within the network. Moreover, static routing method can be used whenever there is a requirement of complex routine policies. In static routing, the administrator has complete information about all the subnetworks that are classified within the environment Thus providing a more safe and sound working environment. In addition to this, it also offers a proficient utilization of resource as it utilize less memory of processor and CPU cycles for calculating network paths(Parziale et.al, 2006)

Dynamic Routing

The dynamic routine technique make use of dynamic routine protocols for an automatic selection of the finest route and incorporating it in the routine table. Unlike static routing in which the routes are entered manually into the routine table, the dynamic routing gets the updates of routine automatically and dynamically makes a decision about which routes are best to be placed in the routine table. There, it is an intellectual and hands-off approach. Dynamic router refers to a router containing routing tables that are dynamically configured. They use dynamic routine protocols which is a chain of on demand or periodic messages that contain information about the routine which is exchanged among the routers(FortiOS Dynamic Routing Guide,2010)
