Introduction

Chemistry is the science devoted to the study of the structure, properties, composition and transformation of matter. It is possible to consider the chemistry of today as an upgrade or an evolved form of ancient alchemy. There are different disciplines of chemistry, which are grouped by type of study being done or the kind of stuff they study. It is important to note that the chemical also analyzes the changes that occur in this area calls for chemical reactions.

Stereochemistry is defined as the study of the three-dimensional structure of molecules. Stereochemical considerations are important in both isomerism and studies of the mechanisms of chemical reactions. Implicit in a mechanism is the stereochemistry of the reaction: in other words, the relative three-dimensional orientation of the reacting particles at any time in the reaction. Concentrating on organic chemistry, this paper deal mainly with definitions of terms complete with suitable examples to illustrate key concepts. Aspects of stereochemistry are explored through consideration of addition reactions to alkenes and carbonyl groups, and nucleophilic substitution (Pedro, 2007).

Stereochemistry

The science of chemistry organic, as we said, is based on the relationship between structure and molecular properties. That part of science that deals with the structure in three dimensions is called stereochemistry. One aspect of stereochemistry is the stereo isomerism. Recall that the isomers are different compounds that have the same molecular formula.

The kind owners of isomers which differ only by the spatial orientation of their atoms but that are equal to each other as to which atoms are bonded to which other are called stereoisomers.
