Summary

Introduction

Language is an important part of human life, which helps people in interacting and sharing information, knowledge and ideas with others. There are many languages present in the world, which represents different societies, cultures and forms of people (Chowmsky, 1972). The book “Achieving Success in Second Language Acquisition” intends to provide information to undergraduate students who are experiencing language learning. The goal of the book is to enhance learning strategies of the students and help them in learning languages by undergoing a learning process. Foreign language teachers can use this book to develop teaching language strategies, which can help in providing effective knowledge to students.

The book is divided mainly into three parts, which are further divided into sub parts. Part I of the book is “Learning” and this part consists of information regarding the learning strategies and dynamics. This part provides an understanding of the role of cognition, learning strategies, interpersonal dynamics, and feelings and personality in the process of achieving success in second language acquisition. Part II of the book is “Language” and this part helps in understanding the importance and worth of verbal and non-verbal communication in the process of learning different foreign languages. Part III of the book is “Independence” and this part consists of information on control on written and verbal communication and learner autonomy. The book provides complete guidance on how a learner can learn foreign languages by putting in efforts. This report consists of a summary of first three chapters of the book, which focuses on the learning process of language (Leaver, Ehrman and Shekhtman, 2005).

The book “Achieving Success in Second Language Acquisition” helps in learning the process of learning foreign languages. Students learn different languages as a part of their course for different purposes.

Chapter 1: Planning Foreign Language Study

In order to learn a foreign language, it is necessary to understand the aim of learning a new language. It is necessary to plan things and ask yourself questions like why you want to learn a foreign language and what is the purpose of learning a foreign language. The book presents many reasons for students learning a foreign language. Learning a foreign language helps students in achieving good jobs as many companies today require employees having knowledge of different languages. Globalization has increased need of learning different languages as people are travelling from one country to another for different purposes, and it has become a necessity to understand different languages. Learning a foreign language increases the opportunities of earning jobs in a foreign country.

Some students opt to learning a foreign language because they are interested in foreign literature. They enjoy reading literature in its original language without impediment as they consider it more interesting. Students who are interested in linguistics and sciences of how languages are constructed and evolve can benefit from learning another language.
