Abstract

Ship broker has been of the oldest profession that been affiliated to the shipping market. With the passage of time, advent of technology, changes in the modes of communication and the development of the multinational firms, the role of the ship broker has changed to a greater extent as compared from the past. These changes have made much impact on the shipping industry and the role of the ship broker. These factors may include changes in the design supply chain, derived demand, shipper's change in demands: changing economy, uncontrollable factors like the (time costs), the globalization of production, the increasing power of carriers, container marker and innovation: development in shipments, the communication and ship broking etc has particularly marked the evolution in the in the role of ship brokers in the shipping industry. Apart from the changes it has produced and the threats it has provided to the ship breaking industry, there are many other positive aspects with the changing role of the ship broker. It has provided the opportunity to explore many other segments of the shipping markets as well. The results of the participants who took part in the questionnaire survey, it has been found that most of the people who belong to the ship broking profession, strongly agreed that proper research work, by ship broking companies, can assist to determine the highs and lows of market and subsequently, “sustainability”. Similarly, international trade and emerging markets have opened a new window for ship brokers to expand into developing companies.
