Sustainable Design and Low Density Polyethylene

Sustainable Design

Sustainable products are not the products which do not have nor has least impacts on environment and the human health as considered over the life cycle. It is a great matter of interest is to have a balance environmental affect in the surrounding of industry. The selection of the material that saves from putting bad impact on the working environment of the surrounding is very necessary (sustainable design: Aspects and impacts, Slide 2). The technical persons often face the problems regarding the materials' choice or method of manufacturing under the criteria of environmental issues. To fulfil the requirement of the environmental impacts, the designer must meet the functional needs and the cost of the project with the budget. With the help of life cycle analysis approach, the material's impacts on the environment can be described properly. If the assessment is the third criterion step, individual may expect the hazards like toxic emissions, energy requirements, and carbon emissions. These effects may harm the environment badly. It deals more in the chemical reactions in the air, which pollutes the environment at a serious scale.

The primary concern of the modern society is the sustainability in product life cycle. According to Brundtland (1987), the published study of United Nation the design that fulfils that requirements and needs of the current situation without cooperation the chance of failure for the future generations to make their needs. There are three pillars that support the sustainability, which are Economics, Society, and Environment. The economy provides the support because most of the time sustainable products are expensive or vital. The sustainable development produces balancing economic performance, social progress, and environmental protection. The plastic industry describes the sustainability in a precise way (Szekeres & Jeswiet, 2013, pp. 584).

Designer Perspective Information

Low Density Polyethylene is a colourless, non-reactive with solids, and non-flammable with no order. The carbon emission rate of LDPE is 1.05 times of it's per tonnes production. It standardized in transportation bags with the weight of 25 Kg LDPE widely used as a raw material in the industry of Plastic Processing. It is non hazardous and its exposure in affectless for the human health. It cannot affect the human health the surrounding environment with its long or short-term inhalation. It usually stored in a cool place and ventilated place. LDPE needs to remain away from sunlight and application of heat. It inlay sent for plastic industry processing applications. Its processing also requires good ventilation during processing. It can transport and used without any dangerous. To the environmental aspect, the activities, services and products that can affect the environment, its dust does not put any threat on the surrounding of the working place (CAS No. 9002-88-4, pp2, 2004).

The melting point temperature of LDPE is between 110 to 130 degree centigrade. That makes it less emiisable for carbon as compared to steel. The LDPE releases 1.05 tonnes of CO2 within 1 tonnes of its ...
