Learning outcome 1: Addressing the Range of Communication Requirements in My Job role

Range of groups and individuals whose communication Needs must be addressed in my job role

The persons having communication issues require assistance to make them capable of expressing themselves efficiently. Hence, it is important for me in my managerial role, to be aware of the person's favoured means of communication and also to prop the person to employ their favoured means. Persons have the right to interact in their own preferred means and their selection must be respected and acknowledged by encouraging them. The person's rights are specifically significant when employing particular means of communication and language since it is their main way of conversing their requirements and choices. Communication is a basic human right; with no communication, the person is not able to comprehend and work out their rights. The Human Rights Act of 1998 ensures every person to have the right of “freedom of expression”; in the event of not being able to communicate, they would deny these rights. In my area of work, I deal with groups of people with the communication needs that are as follows;

Sensory disabilities

Those disabilities that affect the senses of a person and ultimately affect communication are termed as sensory disabilities, such as sight loss and hearing loss. These are the two major senses, on which humans are dependant to communicate in their surroundings.

Hearing loss

Hearing loss refers to a person who is has no sense of hearing at all, and also the persons who can hear but with some difficulty. Persons who are born deaf would be aware of the sign languages so as to communicate; nevertheless, those people who get this disability after birth at some time, usually have just verbal speech as the mode of communication. For these reasons, such persons need support for them to communicate efficiently.

Sight loss

Sight is one of the most important senses of a person that help in communication. Maximum of what we communicate is via non verbal means; this includes our body language, i.e., face expressions, our movements, body postures, etc. Just as hearing loss, sight loss can be in born or it may occur after birth, both carrying different levels of difficulties in communication and the need to adapt to different means to communicate.

Learning disabilities

Majority of the persons having a learning disability do require some particular communication needs. Many such persons have no recognized cause of their difficulty in communication. Persons having learning disability may be affected slightly, reasonably or severely. Majority of the persons having severe learning disabilities have no any effective verbal speech.

Down's syndrome

Down's syndrome is a disorder of chromosomes when foetus is produced with additional pair of chromosome. Almost 75% of the persons having Down's syndrome have hearing difficulties like speech sounds, forming words, etc. If such people also have learning disabilities, then they face even more difficulty in communication.

Autism

Persons having autism face disorders in communication that could make it complicated for the persons to interact ...
