Task 3: Avoiding plagiarism

What is meant by Plagiarism?

The act of plagiarism conducted by an individual for purposeful cheating is corrupting the concept of scientific researches. The concept of plagiarism is simple, as it is an act of steeling others work and taking credit for it. However, this act can be at times unintentionally as individuals are unaware of the concept about plagiarism in lack the know-how of to avoid such act. Moreover, plagiarism is more commonly done purposefully and intentionally due to many reasons (Park, 2003, pp. 471-488). Plagiarism is considered unethical and unlawful, as it is perceived as a case of cheating. However, the complication arises as individuals usually young students carry little or no awareness of plagiarism and perform it without understanding that it is a wrong way of doing their work.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

The notified consequences of plagiarism are healthy enough for any writer to avoid the discrepancies related to plagiarism. There are few methods of avoiding plagiarism, which could certainly help in saving ones reputation and others work. The first method of avoiding plagiarism is to make some efforts in and paraphrase others work in maintaining the author's thoughts and ideas. In addition to paraphrasing, it is necessary to cite the used work, which is paraphrased with proper and original citations and avoid unnecessary citations, which are not used in the paper (Park, 2003, pp. 471-488). Moreover, to avoid plagiarism it is necessary to directly quote any authors work used in the document. As the reasons for plagiarism are ineffective time management and lack of knowledge, to avoid plagiarism it is necessary for students to compel notes and manage their time effectively, so that they do not need to copy paste others work when facing shortage of time and meeting deadline.

How to Cite in the Body of a Report

There are various in-text citation styles according to different formatting style. In Harvard referencing system, in-text citation is done by acknowledging the actual authors within the paragraphs (Neville, 2010, pp. 28-67). Harvard style citation is done by writing of author, year and the page number. These things are enclosed under the round brackets.

How to Reference

A website

In-text: Cite the author's or the name of the authoring body and the date.

For Reference List: Name of the author/organization + year + sponsor's name of the website + data retrieving day month year + Internet address or URL (between pointed brackets)

A text book

In-text: Cite the of author or the name of editor + year + page number.

For Reference List: of the author/editor and initials of middle and first name + year of the book published + title of the book + name of the publisher + page numbers.

An Academic Journal

In-text: Cite the of the author or authors + year of publication + page number.

For Reference List: of the author/editor and initials of middle and first name + year of the book published + title of the article + name of the journal + page numbers, ...
