Introduction

Transmission protocols and application level services are comprehensively supported by the TCP/IP networking suite. It also provides support for the clients such as SNMP, Telnet, HTTP, and many others. For large networks, Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is designed. TCP/IP includes all these features as standard in a server based setting. There is no need to pay extra or to apply extra cost, as additional functionality is added to the system. The basic use of the TCP/IP protocol is on the Internet, as internet holds the collection of thousands of networks worldwide. These internet protocols provide a network connection among the universities, companies, government agencies, research facilities, libraries and individuals.

Different types of computers and servers can be connected through TCP/IP. One of the main benefits of TCP/IP is this type of interoperability provided through it. The operations of TCP/IP are independent and uses open protocol. Interworking is enabled through the use of TCP/IP in a server based setting. This paper explains the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol along with its benefits in a server based setting.

Discussion

The aim of the development of TCP / IP was to create a set of protocols that offer connectivity between wide ranges of standalone systems. In 1983, the TCP / IP became the official protocol used by the network of the American Department of Defense. The two distinct protocols can be identified through the implication of TCP/IP: TCP and IP. TCP and IP are the distinct protocols, but their common use together in the today's internet has urged to use TCP/IP as a standard terminology. It has been referred to as network communications where as the data is delivered from TCP transport across IP networks (B.T. Alo, 2012).

TCP/IP has been characterized to follow good failure recovery, high error rate handling, low data overhead and platform independence. Without interrupting existing services, TCP/IP has the ability to add networks. Troubleshooting has been provided by TCP/IP networking from a system administration point of view. Resources can be accessed through Neutrino-based Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol network that are located on any other system supported by TCP/IP. Low overhead is the reason behind the efficiency of the TCP/IP. The performance of TCP/IP in a server based setting is the key for any network. Speed and simplicity of TCP/TP is unmatched from other networking suites (B.T. Alo, 2012).

TCP/IP holds two types of hosts that are clients and servers. Client is he who asks for the TCP/IP service and the role of the servers is to follow the request made by the client. Thus servers provide TCP/IP services. In order to plan a network it is necessary to take decision for the expected server or the client, i.e. which hosts will be clients and which will be servers.
