Advantages of YouTube

There are various benefits that YouTube can provide to a teacher as well as student in a classroom. We discuss 5 of the advantages of using YouTube in the classroom.

Variety of content

YouTube contains a wide variety of educational content that includes videos on subjects like science, geography, literature, mathematics, and so on. These videos are not only uploaded by professionals, but also by amateurs which include video blogs, short original videos and specific curriculum or standard based educational videos. YouTube also provides opportunities for the teachers to create channels, where they can upload video content related to the subjects they taught and take quizzes from those videos.

Authenticity of content

Tthe open and collaborative nature of YouTube allows users to shape and mold the culture around them in ways that can be both immediate and long-term (LaMonica, 2006; Scoble & Israel, 2006; Weinberger, 2002). This can expose students to inauthentic videos and thus, can lead to obtaining incorrect information relating to a particular subject. However, the collaborative nature of the tools also allows for users to monitor one another's responses. When users contribute inaccurate content, other users correct what has been posted and can do so in record time. Therefore, the content remains authentic (Moran, Seaman & Tinti-Kane, 2011). Moreover, teacher can create s separate channel for the students, and can keep relevant and authentic video material for the students. This way student will only be exposed to authentic content.

Availability on the Internet

The competitive advantage YouTube has over others websites is that the wide variety of content available on it. If a student or teacher has to find some information on a particular subject, a video will be available on that subject on YouTube. This does not happen on other websites. Therefore, availability of YouTube on the internet is very much useful for both teachers and students.

Integration of audio and visual features

According to Duffy (2008), audiences today expect lectures to be visually augmented. Moreover, they also want the speaker to visually augment their lectures with a level of sophistication that was unheard of even 10 years ago. In this case, YouTube videos can help teachers speed up comprehension and add interest of their lectures in their students' minds (Miller, 2009). The videos can help students memorize the concepts and increase their recalling power. Moreover, by using videos teachers can save their presentation time and can help students understand complex issues and ideas.

Opportunity to create your own content

With the emergence of Web 2.0, the content on the internet became dynamic and changing (Luo, 2010; Gillmor, 2007). This means that the users of YouTube are capable of creating ...
