Tesco is a significant international retailer. As a global business, the company perceives itself as having a vital role to play in helping to minimize its environmental impacts. Although based in the United Kingdom, Tesco PLC has developed into an international grocery and general merchandising chain, employing 440,000 staff worldwide, and with sales exceeding £59 billion (in the year ending February 2009). Since the mid-90s, Tesco has been investing in new markets overseas, seeking out new opportunities for growth and ways of generating long term returns for shareholders. Today, the Group operates in 13 markets outside the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and North America. Over 10,000 employees work for the international businesses, serving in 2,026 stores and generating £17.9 billion sales and over £700 million profit. Over half of Tesco's selling space it is now outside the UK. Operating income exceeded £3 billion. These figures make Tesco the largest British retailer in terms of both combined sales and domestic market share, and the third largest in the world after Wal-Mart (United States) and Carrefour (France). It claimed that £1 in every £10 of UK retail sales goes the way of Tesco.

Tesco is the largest supermarket chain in the UK and Third, in the world. Tesco is twice as large as its nearest rival, Asda. Tesco has expanded to other countries like Ireland, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Thailand, India, Japan and China. Tesco has hypermarkets on the outskirts of cities but also have built small stores in town centres for people who are doing their shopping on foot, currently has over 2026 stores in the UK and 1275 in the world. It seems that Tesco involved in all sectors of the economy.
