Test Validity Assignment

Test Validity Assignment

Introduction

Validity is the degree to which a situation or measuring instrument measures what it wants or measured. The validity is sometimes called "accuracy (Kubiszyn & Borich, 2003, 23). Validity is the fundamental criterion to assess whether the results obtained in a study is adequate. Validity for measurement is so difficult to establish because it can introduce systematic error that affects the size and direction of the effect found. Measurement error is added to the sampling error reducing capacity. Although there are many ways for estimating validity of a test, the most popular validity for the majority of certification and other such programs is Content Validity.

This paper aims to describe different forms of validities by analyzing the assessment for BLS students and discuss whether or not the assessment reflects these forms of validities in assessing the knowledge of the students.

Questions for Testing Knowledge

The following four questions have been selected from the Basic Life Support Course which may be used for testing and assessing knowledge for the given assignment.

Q.1. Name the most common cause of cardiac arrest in pediatric age group?

This question will be testing the candidate's knowledge of the “facts” related to Basic Life Support.

Expected answers

Cardiac arrhythmia

Hypoxia secondary to respiratory arrest or obstruction

Trauma due to fall from height

Q. 2. Explain the management process of a pediatric patient with cardiac arrest?

This question will be testing the “procedures” related knowledge of the candidates. The student will be expected to state the procedure in a sequence as per AHA guidelines.

Expected answers:

Maintain airway

Check for pulse - if no pulse

Perform chest compressions (15 compressions:2 respirations)

Continues for 5 cycles and then assess breathing and circulation

Stop if patient regain his pulse or help arrived.

Q.3. Why is it necessary to perform CPR within 5 minutes of cardiac arrest?

This question will be examining the knowledge of the students about the “concept” aspect of the Basic Life Support.

Expected answers:

Chances for recovery are too low

Brain death takes place

Patient dies

Q.4. Explain what is the pathophysiology of cardiac arrest?

This question will be testing the “principle”. Students will be expected to explain how cardiac arrest occurs.

Expected answer:

“The heart has an internal electrical system that controls the rhythm of the heartbeat. Problems can cause abnormal heart rhythms, called arrhythmias. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or it can stop beating. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart develops an arrhythmia that causes it to stop beating. This is different than a heart attack where the heart usually continues to beat but blood flow to the heart is blocked”.

Types of Validity

There are several means and ways of establishing the validity of a test. These include the following (Kerlinger, 2006, 112).

1.Content validity

2.Concurrent validity

3.Construct validity

4.Face validity

5.Predictive validity

Content Validity

Amongst the various types of validity, Content Validity is perhaps the most important validity for a majority of works. Content Validity is a coherent and logical evaluation which seeks to establish connections and relationships between the items in the test and the focus tasks of the ...
