Introduction

Ronald Raegan by far is considered as one of the most popular and successful presidents of the United States. He was well known for his effective economic and foreign policies. When he joined the president office as the 40th president of the country, inflation was at its peak and with slow economic growth. Raegan took care of the economic situation by policies or as people called Raeganomics helped the people of the country be less dependent on Government funds and provided them with job opportunities. He emphasized upon tax deduction and reducing government programs in order to reduce the expenditures and make the economy independent (Why Guides).

Situation

One of the most prominent situation that called for attention in terms of diplomatic efforts during the tenure of President Raegan was his efforts that were done for the end of Cold War. He made a speech addressing Soviet Union Leader and President Mikhail S. Gorbachev to tear down the berlin wall. This speech had a purpose to not only end the Cold War but it was done with an underlying purpose of gaining the support of the Soviet nation and people and strengthen the relations between the two countries. Raegan's speech created an environment and basic setting for the ending of the Cold War (Schansberg, 2009). its is also reported that during that time Raegan met with Gorbachev five times and no other American president had met any Soviet Union's President so many times. He took a strong stance and stand for end of the Cold War which was in other terms a victory for United States and helped in gaining the confidence of Soviet people. His efforts and diplomatic policies that he undertook gained both support and criticism from his supporter and crtitics. Initially the American president was aggressive in his dealing with Soviet Leaders especially Leonid Brezhnev who was known for his ruthlessness and wanted to keep the Sovie Empire together by force. Raegan in his famous speech of Evil Empire called and stated the leadership of Brezhneve as “focus of the evil in the modern world”. He openly condemned the leader for his negative ways of ruling a nation.

The Doctrine

The doctrine that Raegan followed in his diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union was that of communism and containment. Through this doctrine Ragean promoted people to believe in the policy which emphasized upon eliminating communism from spreading in the regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America (Wisegeek, 2003). This was later on also supported by the Soviet Union after the end of the Cold War. Raegan gained the support of many and was praised for his diplomatic efforts in relaltion to the end of Cold War. In his struggle for gaining freedom for the people of Soviet Union he was able to gain the approval of Gorbachev and the Cold War ended without use of any arms or weapons.
