CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Analysis of crime is a technique for the enforcement of law and it involves a systematic analysis that helps identify and analyze the trends and patterns in crimes. The information on the patterns helps the agencies of law enforcement in order to deploy the resources in an efficient and an effective manner. This information provides assistance to the detectives for apprehending and identifying suspects. Analysis of criminal plays an important role in providing solutions to the problems of crime and to formulate strategies that would prevent crime. Quantitative data analysis of social science is a part of the criminal analysis process, although the qualitative methods are used to examine the narratives of police reports play a major role. The major research question for this research study is to know whether the education level of a civilian crime analyst that produces recommendations that are implemented by police chiefs.

Crime analysis is the process of identifying patterns and relationships between crime data and other relevant data sources to prioritize and target police activity. The uneven distribution of crime in terms of space and place, type of offenders, and victimization, theoretically allows analysts to draw inferences from patterns of crime, which can be used as a foundation for allocating police resources. Crime analysis has developed alongside the reliance on criminal intelligence to direct police activity, the growth of information technologies, and the requirement to monitor police performance. It also has sound foundations within the principles of problem- orientated policing.

Analysis converts raw information into actionable intelligence by seeking patterns in crime data, linking criminal events or constructing detailed suspect profiles.
