The Impact of Adulthood Obesity in the London Borough of Hackney

Abstract

Obesity is a major issue all over the world. The prevalence of obesity is increasing in the United Kingdom and has become doubled in the 25 years. This research aimed to highlight the problem of obesity among adults living in the London Borough of Hackney. The research methodology adopted for this research was qualitative research methodology. According to a survey conducted in 2009, there were 20% adults in Hackney who participated in physical activity of 30 minutes. The rate at which the inhabitants of Hackney participate in physical activities is lower than the average rate of London and England. It highlights the lack of physical activities among the inhabitants of Hackney. The findings have also revealed that the dietary intake of inhabitants of Hackney is not very nutritious. This is another important factor contributing towards an increased rate of adulthood obesity in the region.

Background to the Study

Obesity is a major issue all over the world. The prevalence of obesity is increasing in the United Kingdom and has become doubled in the 25 years. In England, as many as two third of adults and a third of children are suffering from obesity. Unless appropriate actions are taken, it is expected that the rate of obesity, in the year 2050, will be 60% among adult men, 50% among adult women, and 25% among children. The increasing rate of obesity among adults and children has lead towards the need of conducting a research on the impact of Obesity. For this research, the focus of adulthood obesity will be on the London Borough of Hackney.

Rationale of the Study

Obesity has become a serious healthcare issue. It has increased the load of the healthcare system of the United Kingdom. The rising cost of healthcare, as a result of obesity is straining monetary assets.

The prevalence of obesity is directly associated with a number of health problems. Some of these problems include type 2 diabetes mellitus, heart diseases, high blood pressure, depression, strokes, and others. The prevalence of obesity among individuals makes them vulnerable towards diseases. The chances of developing diabetes are twice among obese people than individuals who are not obese. Obesity has also found to be associated with different types of cancers and serious health issues. It is also associated with anxiety, arthritis, and other conditions (Blackburn & Beatrice, 1994, pp. 300).
