Monitoring the Performance of a Distributed Database System

Objective

With the rise of information technology, distributed database systems have become part and parcel of almost all the businesses and enterprises (Osman et al., 2008). However, with the drastic rise in distributed database systems, there is a need to monitor the performance of such systems on regular basis through a proper framework. Keeping this concept in mind, the objective of this thesis is to monitor the performance of a Distributed Database System at organizational level. The study also aims at exploring the benefits of implementing a performance monitoring initiative for Distributed Database System in an organization. Another objective of the study is to present a performance monitoring model that can help to monitor the performance in a better way in comparison to various models that organizations are using currently. Lastly, the study also aims to analyze the impact of a compact performance monitoring system of Distributed Database on the related business and its profitably.

Rationale

Performance monitoring of a Distributed Database System is as important as the financial auditing of an organization. This is because it has a direct link with response time of an organization with its customers (Pei et al., 2000). With slow response time, the customer's satisfaction is negatively impacted as well as the organization's profitability. However, a Distributed Database System depends upon a wide range of operating systems that are spread over a wide range of infrastructure; therefore performance monitoring is not that much straight forward (Osman et al., 2008). Considering this factor, this research topic is selected for assisting the organizations to understand and implement performance monitoring system for Distributed Database in a better way.

Project Plan

Time is an important factor when considering project work. A considerable amount of time will be required to complete this project, as it will require the gathering of a good amount of secondary data. Moreover, the research will make progress according to the university rules so as to collect extensive data for the research study to make it an effective one. The time adjustment of daily hours will be accumulated according to the submission date given by the instructor. Furthermore, the final submission date of the dissertation may get negotiable with the instructor keeping in view the current scenario of the research work at that moment of time.

Adequate time is required in order to diagnose and judge the problem before making critical decisions for suitable strategy making and selecting the method of implementation. Though, this has to be a flexible option to counter the unexpected elements. Available time is distributed in the following percentages:

Introduction                                      10%

Literature review                            30%

Research methods                           10%

Collection of Data                            20%

Analysis                                          20%

Conclusions and Recommendations 10%
