A Discussion Forum provides an opportunity to get actively involved in virtual conversations at any location and at any time. The term threaded discussion refers to online discussion related to any topic. This is helpful for the students as it help them in reading the messages and reply to them. A group of messages comprised of the first messages and the reply messages is called a 'thread'.

Module-1: Difference between Data, Information, and Knowledge in Information System

Information systems are effectively involved in enhancing the performance of the organizations and progress them towards achieving their goals. it supports the business practices of the organizations by helping the management to timely monitor and control different activities (Stair and Reynolds, 2006). In order to make the information system more beneficial it is important to have better understanding of the differences between data, information and knowledge.

Data

For conducting the activities within an organization, input of data is essentially required. According to Stair and Reynolds (2006), the term data refers to the raw facts like employee wages, information, code numbers, working hours, sale numbers or tracking numbers. The scope of data collected is basically dependent on the specific need of information depends on what information needs to be implemented for bringing effectiveness in the organizational activities. It is stated by Kumar and Palvia (2001) that data is considered to be very important for the organizations. The importance of data is identified in last few years as companies have observed that it plays a vital role in their progression. Data is basically considered as a very valuable asset for the companies. In order to establish information and knowledge about any company relevant object, data is collected for making improved management decisions for the favor of the company (Rivard and Benoit, 2008).

Information

Information is the interpretation of data and bits which is used to create a clear picture of raw facts (Stair and Reynolds, 2006). The importance of information may vary. According to Khurana and Mandke (2009), the importance of information is based on its reliability. Integrity and reliability of information is defined as its trustworthiness. It plays a vital role in determining strategic business advantage. The main features of information integrity involve reliability, consistency and accuracy. The value of information can be achieved when it's combined with some other qualities as well. These quality factors include simplicity, flexibility, timely, relevance, verifiability, security and accessibility (Stair and Reynolds, 2006).

Knowledge

Knowledge is the process which converts data into useful information. This process of conversion of data into valuable information is dependent on the connection established among various sets of data (Stair and Reynolds, 2006). The term knowledge refers to the understanding and awareness of a set of information and the effective implementation of information to support a particular activity in order to reach towards its goals (Stair and Reynolds, 2006, p. 6).
