How Can Government of Libya Support Tourism After War

Introduction

In the recent year, there has been severe protest against Gaddafi leading to war against his government. The government had sent a long term plan for the tourism industry for 2009-2013. The tourism aimed at growing the tourism industry to 1.8 million trips to Libya by 2013. It also highlighted the importance of expanding domestic andtroduction adventure tourism. Libya has many places that may attract the tourist; it offers various historical and ancient places that could attract tourists. However, the war significantly affected the tourism industry, as tourist was reluctant to visit various places of Libya (Butler, R. W, 1974, pp. 100- 111).

Prior to the war, government initiatives started showing its results as investment and tourism industry in the country started to flourish. It was planned that more than six 5 star hotels would be developed in Tripoli city alone for visiting tourists. It also set targets for the development of heavy infrastructure, including roads, airports and rail projects, in the country. The government planned to link Libya with its neighboring countries. The tourism industry was a great source of investment for the investment prior to the war.

Industry experts say that Libya has a great potential for the tourism industry. The coastal area of the country has all the makings to become a great place for tourist even after the war. The weather is warm in Libya, which is ideal for tourists. The country offers beautiful beaches, and antiquities that could be a source of strong attraction (Chudnovsky, & Lopez, 2003, 5-18). Government can establish tourism industry by proper planning and effective management. As Libya has just experienced the war, and new government is not in a position of managing tourism industry solely. Hence, it is necessary for the government to develop target for short terms before targeting long term goals (Bossel, H, 2000, pp. 337-355).

New government of Libya should bring peace in the country and make it a safe place by collecting the weapon from common people or recruit them in the Libyan new army. There are serious security issues in the country, and without adequate security measures, the tourism industry cannot be successfully developed. The new government of Libya should bring investment in the tourism industry, and encourage the local and international investor to invest in the tourism industry (Gee, 1989, 25). Despite offering unspoilt landscapes and a rich history dating back thousands of years, Libya's tourism sector languished during the reign of Colonel Gaddafi. However, while his ouster opens up new possibilities for attracting greater tourism revenues, the country faces a host of challenges in its efforts to rebuild its tourism industry (Boo, 1990, 125-252).
