Transtheoretical Model

Theoretical Model for Losing Weight

Introduction

Losing weight has been an essential practice for me as it was prescribed to me by the doctor because of obesity through which I was suffering. It was suggested to me that losing weight would help me in restoring my health and be active in physical and sports activities in the future. I used the transtheoretical model for losing weight and this model helped me a lot in losing weight and being active in my physical activities. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of the transtheoretical model in my time period of losing weight along with the activities that I involved in the stages involved in the transtheoretical model.

Discussion

The transtheoretical model is referred to the conceptualized terms of several major dimensions. The major constructs or elements around which the other dimensions are organized are the stages of change. The stages of change are referred to the organized activities for the enhancement of the motivational readiness for changing the behavior of an individual towards a problem. There are transitions between the stages of changes that are impacted by a set of independent variable known as the processes of change. It is also obvious that the transtheoretical model incorporates a number of outcome variables including the decisional balance, situational temptation to engage in the problem behavior, self efficacy, and behaviors that are specific to the problem area (Cancer Prevention Research Center, 2013). It is also significant that a number of environmental, psychological, physiological, cultural, biochemical, socioeconomic to influence the behavior of an individual towards the problem or issue being studied.

The problem on which I was working was increase weight and my objective was to reduce weight to improve my health conditions. The stages of change that have been identified by the transtheoretical model were involved in my strategy of losing weight. The following are the five stages of change that have been identified in the transtheoretical model.

Precontemplation.

Contemplation.

Preparation.

Action.

Maintenance.

The following is the discussion about the importance of the stages of change in the process of losing weight and the activities that were involved by me in each of the stage for enhancing the effectiveness of the weight reduction process.

Precontemplation

Precontemplation is referred to a stage in which individuals are not likely to take an action in the near future predicted to be the next six months. This behavior of the individuals is likely to occur because they may be uninformed or less informed about the consequences or the after effects that they present behavior could have on their own behavior. This behavior is could also be there because the individual could have tried to change their behavior a number of times but became demoralized about their ability to change. The same happened with me when I was in the precontemplation stage during my weight reduction process. I tried to change my eating habits many times but was then distracted by my friends to eat and drink unhealthy foods that increased my weight problems (Demarchi, ...
