Introduction

In the context of the contemporary environment the movies produced at Hollywood are more focused on the blockbuster factors rather than the strength of the stories. In this environment the movies such as the Avengers and the Batman trilogy, have completely dominated the cinematic industry. The majority of the production houses have a view to reach the global audience and maximize the box office returns. In this perspective the stories are focused on popular and approachable characters such as super heroes; so that it can be easily accepted by the global audience. In this environment the movies which are based in history, are not solely developed to portray historic accuracy. The focus is still on the story itself and the commercial element of the movies. The examples of such movies can be taken from the popular Hollywood blockbuster '300', in which the entertainment elements severally overpowered the historical accuracy factors. The fictionized portrayal of the Battle of Thermopylae was based on the adventure and high levels of violence. The movie was narrated as a heroic tale, spoken by one of the 300 brave Spartan warriors, who defeated the mighty Persian army.

Although in the movies such as 300 or even other recent historic blockbusters, the plot is highly fiction based; it can be highlighted as a part of the legends of history. These movies in no way depict the historic events on the established facts; however they do rely on the ancient form of storytelling. Throughout history the battles of great men are transformed into legends through the exaggerated retelling of the societies. The modern cinema has relied on this strategy of telling great historical events of the past, by infusing the modern technologies. Hence the way the majority of the historical movies are depicted in the contemporary cinematic industry is based on the ancient tradition of storytelling; where the feats of brave men become the metaphors for superhuman abilities. It is due to this reason that the movies such as 300 which outrageously stretched the factual nature of the historic events still can be believed by the global audience; because it is in fact the perspective of one of the soldiers who took part in the battle. This form of storytelling allows the producers of the movie, to ensure that they can utilize the CGI based technologies in order to ensure that the entertainment value can be attained by the audience.
