Introduction

This movie is based on a true story of a black man, Solomon Northup, who fought for his freedom and survival along with his wife and two children. He was a free man from Saratoga Springs, New York who was kidnapped and sold as a slave. He faced cruelty by his owner named malevolent, but he unexpectedly survived and able to retain his dignity. In the 12th year of slavery, Solomon met a Canadian abolitionist, who altered his life forever (Northup, 2013a; 2013b).
