Unit 9 - Assignment

Introduction

Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) has played a vital role for conducting professional and ethical practices. The guidelines of these principles are used to assess the weakness and strengths of interpersonal characteristics of a person. Being a behavior analyst, the practitioner is responsible for maintaining the performance of a person, their conduct and monitors the reasons and implications of their behavior. The BACB department has prepared and updated the new guidelines of behavior that affects the experts, practitioners, consumers and employers. These guidelines have described the disciplinary and ethical standard that has to be mandated for use by the three experts during behavioral trainings, they would conduct. With the development of policies, a variation has been noticed in the newly set guidelines (Shook & Neisworth, 2005).

The behavior analysts are working under all these guidelines and providing for ideal treatment methods to their consultants. These principles provide an efficient design and support network which utilizes behavioral science concepts and guidelines for analysis.

Scenario 4

Kevin has a bad habit to bang his head when he needs attention of his parents. Mostly, he uses this method when his parents and teachers might be busy in their work and ignoring him for a while. The parents had been worried and consulted a practitioner for eradicating this bad habit. The boy has taken to a different therapist for getting a better response. Occupational therapist, speech and physical therapist have played a vital role for making his performance better, but no change has been noticed. The behavioral analyst has also recommended shock wave therapy.

Scenario Analysis

The shock wave treatment is not an appropriate medication treatment because it may negatively affect Kevin. The boy needed reinforcement, of a positive kind, that will help him in getting over his wrong actions, to get attention of his parents. Shock wave therapy is under a lot of debate. Many consider this treatment methodology as immoral, but if the child would not modify his behavior, then the therapist can be limited in their options to treat the patient.

Furthermore, from the above guideline, “4.05 Reinforcement/Punishment“ is another treatment method that can be possibly applied in this scenario. The performance analyst can adopt reinforcement treatment rather than punishment. If Kevin would not change his behavior, than he can adopt any other option behavioral approach.

The ethical approach that has to be used in this behavioral modification and therapy program has to adhere to the rules and guidelines mandated by the BACB. This is most important in correcting and modifying attention seeking behavior of the child, Kevin. The behavioral analyst can take an alternative approach by avoiding the shock wave therapy. As suggested earlier, reinforcement may adequately be a suitable and harsh action and may worsen Kevin's behavior.
