Policy Steps towards the Use of Force Issues

According to Use of Force policy, when the circumstances are beyond control, the officers enter the realm of repression (Miller, 2012). They must use force to the necessary extent, proportional to the resistance of the offender and provided that no excessive damage would result. The steps are as follows:

Physical Strength: It involves using only body strength and reduction in the prosecution of the person who is to repress and has ignored all warnings that had been done before (Rahtz, 2003).

Weapons of Deterrence: When the police are outnumbered by the offenders or carry them blunt, it is necessary to use canes where circumstances warrant under the rule of proportionality.

Firearms: Officer should use a firearm as a last resort, only in self-defense or defense of others or in situations where there is a serious, imminent and present to the lives of people. He/she should always act in a manner that minimizes the risk to third parties outside the process and where the risk of compromising the physical integrity of persons (Rahtz, 2003).

Further, the use of weapon should be under following possibilities mentioned in the policy:

Verbal Warning: Before using the weapon the police should identify as such and warn the offender intended to use the weapon, given enough time if possible, so that the offender reconsider and lay down their attitude of resistance.

Hands on the Gun: In some situations, placing his/her hand on the gun is sufficient to reduce the offender after the verbal warning.

Unsheathe the Weapon: The weapon drawn unlisted is usually an effective remedy to discourage the resistance or violators of the law.
