Abstract

Video games are a must source of entertainment for the children of today's generation. It is one of the most popular and favorite non school activities of children from all the age groups. Kids prefer to play video games throughout the day and the advancement of technology allows them to do so. Many researchers believe that video games have very negative impact on the minds of children as it tends to bring personality changes in an individual such as aggression, frustration and hostility. Although other believes that video games can have positive affects too. Video games can be a great medium of social interaction especially for those children with a shy nature. It can also develop the importance of healthy competition in kids. It brings in the feeling of participation and achievement in a child. Video games can be very helpful if used properly in academic institutions by educators. It tends to grasp the attention of even the most troublesome students. This study believes that video games have more positive impacts on a child rather than the negative ones.

Introduction

Playing games on the computer is one of the most popular and favorite non school activities of children from all the age groups. The new media, such as the television and the video games are getting a lot of attention nowadays as they are playing a very important part in a life of an individual. It has been seen that children would prefer playing games on the computer rather than playing outside or doing other activities for fun for instance, reading. This is majorly because the video games offer a lot of excitement, challenges, role play, and at times social interaction with other players through the online gaming system available worldwide. Video games have an attractive aspect which gages the attention of a player, basically motivating and holding on to their curiosity. It is believed that children are giving more time to the games rather than to their studies. Children are exposed to the violent content of the television programs as well as the video games on a regular basis, and this issue is a matter of concern for the parents as well as for the educators (Polman.et.al, 2008).

Various studies doubtlessly shows that children are, in fact, exposed to ample amount violence in new media. In a study done by Buchman and Funk (1996), 13-18 years of children chose violent games over non- violent ones. According to a social learning theory by Bandura (1994), in playing violent video games the player virtually becomes the character of the game, owing to the downright command over the characters behavior. Also, that young kid comes across to a lot of violent content when they are watching television, but on a hypothetical basis the adverse influence of playing a violent video game are greater than watching violence.
