Why Stop Online Piracy Act Should Not Be Passed

Introduction

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) protects consumers and innovators attacking foreign websites that traffic in stolen and counterfeit products, from movies to medicine or baby food. However due to this law many issues will emerge in the future. It is observed that the proposed legislation threatens freedom of expression, investment and innovation on the Internet, because it enables justice to block access to an entire domain by a breach in one single website. Some opponents have shown increasing concern that the law could void the protection of "safe harbor" currently offered by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act for sites that offer user-generated content (Carr, pp 23-78).

Stop Online Piracy Act

The Stop Online Piracy Act works by cutting the money to the sites making it difficult for illegal aliens and criminal's online marketing and distributing illegal products to American consumers. The bill includes provisions that "follow the money" in order to cut the main sources of income of these sites, and also protects consumers from being directed at illegal aliens' websites by search engines. Thus, this provides an innovative way to bring claims against websites illegal aliens who steal and sell their technology, inventions and products (Brandon, pp 123-145).

I realize that some people are nervous because of the misinformation surrounding this bill, but I'm sure that ultimately, the facts outweigh the fears. I am open to constructive suggestions to protect inventors and holders of U.S. intellectual property rights. Unfortunately, some critics simply want to maintain the status quo that harms U.S. companies, consumers and innovators.

It Affects Everyone

As Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is a U.S. law, if it passed it may affect users in Latin America and the world. Many views regarding this action points out this law will not only affect the network infrastructure, but almost all the services we use every day will be affected: YouTube, Google and Twitter are just some of them. Thus, all sites will be forced to practice self-censorship and filtering mechanisms for all online activity of your users to avoid being blocked.

As the bill was created to combat online traffic content and products protected either by copyright or intellectual property. These can be counted as music, movies, books, artistic works and counterfeit products copied or related fees are not taxed to the owners of their rights of authorship or invention.

The bill originally was proposed allows both the Department of Justice of the United States, such as intellectual property rights owners may obtain court orders against those websites that allow or facilitate the infringement of copyright.

It is a fact that Copyright holders are extremely disappointed with those rules in the face of massive industry change.
