Wikipedia and Authorship

Introduction

Most of articles on Wikipedia are a collection of information from people who produced facts out of thin air, without any research work. Many parts of Wikipedia duplicates from other encyclopedias, one of which is the Britannica. However, today this part is only ten percent, the remaining come from each person acting along in a subject. Random articles from an individual's work or knowledge on a subject. The article can be modified by others on the website, and this would be considered as a contribution. After few months, the article would be further modified by another person, who would expand it by adding more information. The editors are a class of two groups, the registered users and the non-registered individuals. The subjects that are old and of less interest get no updating, on the other hand certain subjects in sports grow on a regular basis. This leads to rough quality and coverage. Similarly, numerous articles get hacked multiple times, which change the original style of the article and constitutes frequent errors. There is a watch list on every article that changes and alerts prompt the editors. Vandalism, which is deletion of the whole article or section from the website, is another problem faced on Wikipedia.

Internet has largely contributed to the epidemic of plagiarism. The information is readily available, and it is easier to just copy paste the data as needed. There is little reasoning on the student's part on the subject and thus a serious issue arises. The use of technologies had changed the ways of future scholars the students think about authorship and the lack of interest in learning (David F Kallmes, et al, pp. 920-927). The ideas and words of authors are of their own and anyone else using them must credit them by citing. It is, therefore, the moral obligation on teachers to teach their students about ethical ways of doing work. Highly social interactions like those on face book and creative collaboration such as the Wikipedia is online forums that give little credit to authorship. Contributors of Wikipedia add or edit an article without requesting any payment (Blum.D.et.al, 2006). Academics deplore Wikipedia and not allow in many schools.

Although, the names of authors are written on Wikipedia, all readers who make changes to the article could even intervene and oversee the lawful authority. The notion that the author writes in a vacuum with only an inspiration depicts a true genius person. Students today are skeptical to this idea, and they do not believe that any idea or theory is original. Faculty had enforced meticulous rules on academic citation norms, but a larger part of the student body does not recognize the originality and individualism in creation (Blum.D.et.al, 2006). .
