Innovations in Broadband Access Technologies Using WIMAX

Abstract

The telecommunication industry and the broadband technology have been advanced significantly over past decade. Innovative technologies such as wireless communication and WiMAX have transformed the communication infrastructure, by improving the efficiency and throughput of the networks. This paper focuses on the innovative technologies of WiMAX, and how these technologies have brought up transformations in the broadband access technologies.

Introduction

WiMAX has brought certain major innovations and benefits to the broadband technologies, such as capability of providing multiple channels, improved coverage areas, long range communications and reduction in time and cost of deployment. In this paper, I discuss the major innovations WiMAX has integrated with the earlier broadband communication technologies.

The rest of the paper includes background of the problem, relevant literature review, aims and significance of the research, research questions, reliability and ethics consideration, research strategy, data analysis and gathering techniques, network architecture of the WiMAX, application areas of WiMAX, benefits of WiMAX, and the innovations it brings to the telecommunication industry.

Background to the Problem

The advancements in telecommunication industry and technologies have grown at tremendous rates over the period of last two decades (Yarali, A.R., et.al, 2008). The main factors responsible for fueling up the telecommunication industry include modern semiconductor, digital internet and mobile telecommunication technologies.

In comparison to other communication technologies, WiMAX proves to have a long term role. Advancement and developments in WiMAX technologies and devices have played a vital role in providing mobile internet facilities. It has been a dream of internet users and internet providers to integrate the factor of mobility with the broadband communication technologies; hence the major innovation of WiMAX is the facility of mobility.

The initial phase of WiMAX development dealt with providing cellular and internet services to the rural areas. The larger WiMAX carrier focuses on providing internet facilities to the home based users. The main features of the WiMAX include reliable service, and high speed data access. The adaptation of WiMAX technologies at higher level has brought the cost of customer equipment and carrier significantly down as compared to the initial phases of WiMAX development.

Nowadays, the WiMAX has gained enough popularity to create the infrastructures that utilize shared resources between the rural and metropolitan areas. The economy of broad band communication technologies have been increasing exponentially, and is expected to increase further in the near future.

Literature Review

Considerable amount of research has been done on the topics of WiMAX technology and its innovations. The technical standards for WiMAX, the market options and comparison with the technologies of WiFi and DSL have been presented in (Bai, L., 2007). The thesis analyzed the markets and compared the technologies to find out the economic feasibility and advantages of the WiMAX technology over the others.
