Chapter 1 Introduction

Gender concerns in the office are one of the important topics for discussion and study. Women in the work force are in record numbers, according to the World Economic Forum. One half of the potential talent is accounted for women throughout the world and therefore nation's development and competitiveness is significantly dependent in how it utilizes its female talent. But at the same time, only three percent women are top executives among 500 fortune firms. That is the reason only a 6th of women are top earners in the workforce. Gender inequality, across all organizations is staggering, in terms of compensation. According to the UK Census, a woman only makes 77 pence for every pound earned by a man.

Research indicates that the gender inequality is also exacerbated by the childbirth, for those who take maternity leaves especially. Parental or maternity leave is available to both and women, but a recent study shows that women take 98% of their unpaid leaves. Approximately 33% of those eligible mothers take these depart, as in the evaluation of only 1 per cent of the right parents. Women with small children often earn lower wages and smaller amounts presentation comments after their absence from work due to family leave.
