Youth Employment and the Economy

Here we will compare the approaches of the relationship between youth employment and the economy presented in "Generation X can be formed?" (Page 509) and "Sweet Bird of Youth is showing signs of age" (page 520). Youth is a time of life full of promises, aspiration and energy. Between childhood and adulthood, young people, is when men and women are more eager to strike to secure their future and contribute to their families, communities and societies. This stage of life is crucial to determine the paths of young people to achieve productive employment and decent work. One billion young people will reach working age within the next decade. They offer the possibility to obtain productive employment and decent work is a societal challenge, national and global. It is no wonder that youth employment is listed among the priorities of the international community. This is the best educated and best trained generation of young men and especially young women who already had. They have skills that can make strong communities and nations to strengthen and seek opportunities for personal autonomy and active citizenship. We are more children in school, but we can not get into productive employment and decent work.

While speedy globalization and technological alteration may offer new opportunities for productive work and income for some, working age many young people lack of decent employment opportunities increases their vulnerability in the transition childhood to adulthood. Government investment in education and training will be lost if young people do not move into productive jobs that enable them to meet their needs, contribute to benefit their families and pay their public dues. However, on average, young women and men are two to three times more likely to be unemployed than adults, and this is particularly pronounced among young women. Too often, they work too long hours under informal arrangements for intermittent work and precarious, characterized by low productivity, low incomes and limited labor protection.

Poor employment in the early stages of the careers of young people could damage their self-esteem and employment opportunities throughout their lives. Underemployed or unemployed young people have less money to spend than current users, and to save and invest for future security.
