Introduction

Abortion is the interruption of pregnancy. During a therapeutic abortion, the embryo can be removed or expelled from the uterus, according to the method chosen. There are two types of therapeutic abortion: medical abortion and surgical abortion. During a medical abortion, the pregnancy is interrupted with drugs instead of surgery. This type of abortion can be performed at the early stage of pregnancy - up to seven weeks after the first day of last period. Surgical abortion is the abortion method most common in Canada and United States and is performed by a doctor in a clinic or hospital. Also, called manual vacuum intrauterine, surgical abortion is to dilate the cervix (opening) of the uterus to gently remove the embryo or fetus and placenta tissue. Women have an abortion during early pregnancy are as likely as other women to have a healthy baby later. Except in rare cases, serious complications, safe and legal abortion does not affect fertility (Keown, 1988). The vast array of circumstances with abortion around the world gives the impression that there is no consensus on the issue—yet, some protest that the shared goal among many of these practices and restrictions is a desire to control women. Abortion rights supporters believe that the decision to terminate a pregnancy should be the woman's alone (in consultation with medical professionals); supporters of the right to life publicly denounce abortion as murder (James, 1999).
