Thesis

The past year was somewhat difficult for me. I was told that my son was presenting symptoms of an ADD/ADHD child. It was difficult to accept the truth, but after reading books on the subject, I came to learn that having ADD/ADHD is not a problem, but instead it can be a gift for some children, if it's treated the proper way. As a single mother, I am assuring to learn all that is needed on ADD/ADHD to help my son succeed in life, as a normal child.

I. Why I chose this topic

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the present period in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000; see Chapter 79 for a reconsider of the DSM) to classify individuals displaying persistent, pervasive, developmentally inconsistent, and maladaptive levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. ADHD is one of the most widespread referral concerns to wellbeing care providers and one of the most widespread childhood psychiatric disorders (Barkley, 2006). Evidence of ADHD symptomatology persisting after childhood has resulted in a spectacular increase in mature individual referrals and clinical/empirical publications engaging this population. Literally hundreds of articles are published each year addressing a vast array of issues pertaining to this intriguing and sometimes controversial disorder.

Psychostimulant medications have been used for numerous years to heal young children with behavioral disorders. The stimulants conventionally used to heal ADHD have encompassed medications such as Ritalin and Dexedrine and are the best researched of any medication for childhood behavioral disorders. A more latest development in the psychopharmaceutical remedy of ADHD is the development of a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor atomoxetine (Strattera), which appears to contain promise in the remedy of ADHD and holds little risk for abuse and other contradictory side effects.

Behavioral programming is a pattern of remedy of the symptoms of ADHD that is based on the principles of directed behavioral analysis and operant conditioning. In this pattern of remedy, a student's behaviors are examined in the context of antecedents and consequences that increase or decrease the prospect that a specific demeanour will be ...
