Children with ADHD Pay Attention and Concentrate Better When They Listen Instruction through Headphones

Introduction

ADHD or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a developmental disorder and children of school going age are very commonly affected by it. According to the Fourth Revision of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, there are three subcategories of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (Zinke &McConaughy, 2011). These are listed hereunder.

predominantly inattentive

predominantly hyperactive/impulsive

combined

The diagnosis of the disease is carried out only through critical assessment as there are no medical procedures available for differentiating between children that have ADHD and those who do not. The most common methods used for this differentiation between the two groups of children are the electrophysiological procedures, functional neuroimaging or the morphometric testing. These tests aim at testing the working memory of children, their executive functions and their alertness. In spite of the fact that these tests are widely used, they have been largely criticized for their lack of specificity and sensitivity. To get precise results on the prevalence of ADHD, the medial professionals have to rely on the child's history, his performance in school and at home both academic and social, behaviour of the child while he is under examination and the behaviour of the family from which the child comes.

Aims of the research

ADHD may be understood as a behavioural problem faced by youth. It is a very common ailment and renders the child impaired when it comes to his school performance. 3-10% of children around the globe are affected by ADHD. Then purpose of my research is to come to research on the disease. However, since a lot of research has already been carried out on the subject, I want to take it one step ahead and focus on the influence of headphone usage among children with ADHD. In particular, I want to focus on Cyprus as there is hardly any research that focuses specially on the country.

Research questions

Does ADHD affect the concentration power and listening ability of children when they are given instructions?

How does this inability to concentrate affect the academic and social performance of children?

What is the impact of game elements that comprise of Computerized Working Memory Training on children with ADHD?

How can the psychological and physical interventions be used to improve the performance of these children?

The hypothesis to be tested is as follows:

H0: Children with ADHD pay more attention and concentrate better when listening to instructions for an exercise through headphones.

H1: Children with ADHD do not pay more attention and concentrate better when listening to instructions for an exercise through headphones.

The independent variables will be the selected participants who will be observed under three distinct conditions as stated hereunder.

Test taken with the headphones

Test taken without the headphones

Test taken by the normal children (control group)
