Introduction

Literature is a very fine piece of art that comprises of various attributes in it. It is generally differentiated in terms of genres, style of writing, and types. Literature may be written for a drama, it is poetry, or it is for a play. However, the writing style may also differ the literature; it can be romantic, or a humorous work, or it is a horror. Distinguishing literature may create a very long list. Moreover, literature is also defined based on ethnicity; it can be French literature, African literature, English literature, and so on.

Until the first half of the twentieth century Latin American, literature was little known and appreciated around the world. Rather, he was considered a minor cultural phenomenon, folklore and regionalism. The great centers of culture were in Europe, especially in Paris. This bias also reached in time to the American writers, so much so that as emblematic writers like Ernest Hemingway and Henry Miller, lived and spent part of his work to the City of Light. However, this bias had little to do with reality. In fact, by the late nineteenth century American poet, born in a small town in Nicaragua, revolutionized the letters not only Latin America but also much of Europe, becoming one of the pillars of Modernism.

We have to consider the canons established by two major anthologies (The Norton Anthology of African American Literature, 1997, and Call & Response: The Riverside Anthology of the African American Literary Tradition, 1998) and all the forms of African American oral and print expression that are somehow “literary” but not designated “canonical.” Even as we undertake these difficult choices, we must answer a difficult question: what are our objectives for the study of the cultural expressions, in oral and print forms, of people designated African.
