Argumentative essay against abortion

Introduction

Stripped of moral, religious, and legal considerations, abortion is simply the termination of a pregnancy. But there is nothing simple about abortion or at least, debates over abortion, and the contest over whether and when abortion should be legally permissible has been at the center of the so-called culture war. The abortion debate has shaped party politics, electoral campaigns, legislative agendas, and judicial appointments (McDonagh, 142).

It has led to political rallies, protests, blockades, bombings, and the killing of abortion providers. The lasting conflict and the reach of the controversy into debates over stem cell research, sex education, fertility treatments, population control, and more ensure that abortion will remain newsworthy.

Discussion and Analysis

As a social problem, abortion in the United States, as elsewhere, is only marginally related to variations in the incidence of abortion. During the past century and a half, women's reproductive practices, including abortion, have attracted the attention of a wide range of social actors, including medical professionals, politicians, religious groups, legal experts, scientists, women's rights organizations, and various other groups and individuals taking an active interest in the issue.

There are many abortions performed each year in the United States. Seventy-five percent of all abortions in the U.S. are performed on women over twenty years of age, but the lawmakers try to concentrate on the 186,000 teens that have an abortion each year. In 1990, there were nearly 400 abortion bills were that were introduced to forty-one legislatures. So far, as many as twenty states have passed laws that require a teenager to have parents consent before having an abortion. This may help reduce the number of abortions each year (Ginsburg, 222).

The people that passed these bills feel that maybe the parents will feel differently about the situation and be able to talk their child out of it. Twenty percent of teens that are sexually active do not use any form of birth control. These are the teens that end up getting pregnant and getting an abortion. If these girls would use some kind of contraceptive it could stop a lot of the abortions performed each year.

If people think about it, it is so much easier to take a pill then it is to be pregnant and have to decide on the life of another person. When someone feels that they are responsible enough to participate in sexual activity, they should also feel that they are responsible enough to deal with the consequences that follow.

These various groups approach the issue of abortion from different vantage points, identify different aspects of abortion as problematic, pursue different understandings of the causes and consequences of abortion (for the women who have them as well as for society at large), and propose different kinds of solutions. As a result, abortion has long occupied a contentious position in the sociopolitical landscape, uneasily situated in the intersection of medicine, women's rights, and morality.

Abortion entered national presidential politics late in U.S. history. Originally it was not a partisan issue, but abortion ...
