Pierre Alechinsky

Alechinsky was born in 1927 in Brussels. By 1944, he attended the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture and Decorative Arts of La Cambre in Brussels. Alechinsky Dotremont met Christian in 1949 and joined the Cobra with Karel Appel and Asger Jorn. In the early 50's Alechinsky introduced to printmaking (etching) with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Alechinsky also learn Japanese calligraphy, which he devotes a film in 1952. Alechinsky became friends with Giacometti, Bram Van Velde, Victor Brauner and Wallace Ting. 1955 saw his first major exhibition at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, three years later, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London which houses his works. (Paintings, works on paper, prints) In the 60s, Alechinsky exhibited regularly at The Lefebre Gallery in New York and the Galerie de France in Paris, his paintings are exhibited but also his prints, lithographs and engravings. Many exhibitions are devoted to Alechinsky United States, but also in Holland. In 1969, major retrospective at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, then at the Louisiana Museum of Art in Denmark, then at the Kunstverein in Dusseldorf and the Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany. Alechinsky and Dotremont represent Belgium at the Venice Biennale in 1972, many exhibitions in the world (Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, USA, Canada, and Holland, Mexico).
