Introduction

This paper will present the analysis of the article “Patients' views of patient-centred care: a phenomenological case study in one surgical unit”, which has been taken from the Journal of Advanced nursing. The article discusses about the patient centred care and evidence based practices which are very crucial for the patients. The article aimed to explore the various concepts related to the patients' healthcare based on the qualitative research study grounded in phenomenology. The primary research technique is the interpersonal interviews which were conducted with ten participants who were actually patients in a surgical ward in a large metropolitan hospital in South Australia in 2010 (Marshall, Kitson &Zeitz, 2012).

The article briefly reflects the implications of the Evidence Based Nursing practices. The key points covered in the article are that the evidence-based practice ideally involves the use of good quality research. Second, in the selection and application of 'best evidence', the practitioner combines critical appraisal skills with their own clinical experience. Third, the recipient of care is best placed to determine the applicability of evidence to their own situation. Fourth, evidence-based practice is affected by the available financial resources.

Discussion

The article discusses that Evidence Based Practices (EBP) in terms of patient centred care is a practice that integrates scientific data, expert knowledge and preferences of the people treated. It corresponds to care benefits that have proven most effective for a scientific point of view and for more efficient health care system. This practice is not static. It is constantly changing as it allows caregivers to move from a qualitative to quantitative research. The evidence-based practice is the use of best available scientific research in the management of individual patients. The primary goal of EBP is that daily medical activity is based on scientific data and not assumptions or beliefs. Basic tools that sit on the methodology of EBP are the critical reading of biomedical literature and rational methods of clinical decision making and therapeutic.

The article briefly explains that the patients were fully amazed the care services provided by the healthcare professionals, but they were actually unable to relate to the concept of patient centred care. Patients were able to relate the healthcare services to the connectedness, involvement and attentiveness were prevalent in their descriptions of what they wanted from their care. Clinical decision making is informed by research or other best evidence, but the application of that evidence depends on clinical expertise to use research findings in the interest of the individual patient and in the interest of the wider society (Marshall, Kitson &Zeitz, 2012).

Over the years a number of definitions of EBP have been proffered. Early definitions related specifically to the practice of medicine, where it was increasingly acknowledged that many treatments did not work. The benefits of an approach to practice that involves using the best possible evidence for the care of patients and other users of health services has become apparent to other healthcare professionals, especially nurses (Wodarski, 2007). Evidence-based medicine and evidence-based nursing now ...
