When defining the term “authority”, it refers to the right to do something. It is the first of the triumvirate of authority, power, and control. Establishing authority is the necessary precursor to taking control. Without that authority, or right, being established, taking control becomes illegal or abusive (Lienhard, 1995).

When discussing the authority there are some distinctions in the personal and impersonal authority. For instance, authority could be personal or impersonal both.
