Introduction

Bauhaus and art deco are the movements that describes the change of the arts art formed in the early 20th century. The school lasted in the 20th century and effect the design in all aspects relating industrial design, graphic design, art, architecture, interior design and fashion design. The was the era when the machine were evolving and the many new resources were discovering(Girard, 2003). This is the era of migration towards the urban areas so there huge effect of modernity, machines, invention and technology on the design of this century. Both the movement mark an important era in the history of art.

Bauhaus Aims &Philosophies

Bauhaus was a school of art and design that was followed between 1919 - 1933. It was actually form by a German architect Walter Gropius. The philosophies of this group are influenced by the technology and machines. Industrial revolution was followed by this group so there was a change in the life style of the people. Machines and technologies were flourishing in the same period so the influence of machines and technologies is evident from all the works of art especially graphic designs. This period of time tends to combine all the elements of art into one. It unified sculpture, paintings, architecture, industrial design, interior design, textile design and graphic design. So in short it combined crafts and fine art(Fiedler, 2000).

This period of design was famous for its Holistic approach to design. Another philosophy of Bauhaus was that it provided the design type that was affordable by the masses. It explored the material and raw products for the development of design that was cheap and affordable by all so greater mass could afford it (Girard, 2003). Thus, developing design and design methods for all. It laid the foundation of the modernism as it follows the simplicity and slogan called “form follow function”. The designers of this time believe in the purist concept of the relationship of form to space(Poling, 1986).
