Bilingual Education

Introduction

Is learning a foreign language helpful to the American children as it is in other countries or does a learning foreign language hinder their learning abilities? This is a question that many ask themselves, and contemplate whether or not to teach their children a foreign language. There are many that believe and have proof that learning a foreign language is beneficial. However, there are many experts and politicians that believe that learning a foreign language hinders the education of a child. While it is said that learning a foreign language inhibits the learning of English, early education of foreign language has proven advanced cognitive development.

Bilingual education in other countries is very much a priority. There are many countries that require children to learn a foreign language sometimes more than one language. France is one of the countries that children learn foreign language by the time they are 6 years-old. In class they are not only speaking French, English but they are also speaking Spanish and they are speaking it with no problem. There are many countries that support and teach children foreign languages. Yet the United States does not make it a priority.

Thesis Statement

This research paper aims at finding the benefits of bilingual education in America and provides reasons for promoting it.

Discussion

I believe bilingual education is essential in school rooms for the advantage of dialect few young children, particularly in states for example NY, Florida, and California where the diversity of students in public schools varies in large numbers; and where there are numerous students of distinct backgrounds. The transition of learning a new dialect is exceedingly tough for these students; particularly without been adept to use their own first dialect to make the transition to English easier. If American school rooms become solely English then few dialect speakers are going to be left behind. For demonstration in the "Anatomy of the English Only Movement", by James Crawford, study on second-language acquisition has shown that:

"When dialect few students go incorrect, it is more probable from too little direction in their native dialect than too little English. Along period nationwide study has documented higher student accomplishment in developmental bilingual school rooms than transitional bilingual or organized English immersion classrooms". (Mujica, 2003)

However, supports for the English Only Movement accept as factual that English only education in schools can bring unity between the dialect obstacles and supply an identical education to all children. Equal education mentions to identical educational opportunities for all young children despite of their backgrounds. One of the foremost contentions that supports of English only arguments, in Proposition 227 in California is equality in education, which would make English the sole instructional dialect for every child. However, I accept as factual this contention may work best for native English speakers, but I believe it is unjust for dialect few children; and worry that if English only should be applied in our schools they would be at a disadvantage. I accept as factual that the equality in ...
