Case Study: The Sociology of Healthcare

Introduction

Professionals working in the healthcare industry face ethical and moral issues on a daily basis. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the interaction between healthcare and sociological imagination. The case involves a seventeen year old boy who is estranged from his family, does not have any permanent home, and is otherwise very irresponsible towards his life and health. He has ended up in the hospital emergency due to a fainting spell as he had been drinking excessively the whole night. His heartbeat is very fast, that is, he has tachycardia. However, due to fast action and good care of the hospital emergency, he starts recovering almost immediately leading to his discharge the next day (Boyd, 2005, pp.96-105). Although, he does not have any stability in his life, or any socially responsible adult to take care of him.

Therefore, an analysis of his psychosocial issues needs to be conducted through health perspectives, enforced by a nursing intervention. This will take into account all the social, political, environmental and economical factors in Rogers's life. It will also help the nurses or healthcare practitioners to understand why he chose to live the way he is living, it is known that he is estranged with his parents, but the question arises, why? Why would a seventeen year old boy drop his way of life to live a socially irresponsible one.

Taking into consideration his young age and the rebellious nature of all teens it is perhaps a bit easy to understand his way of life (MacDonald, 2012, pp.181-196). However, issues or not, as this time he has ended up in the hospital emergency which is bound to leave some detrimental impact on his psychological state, due to which he has to be treated and diagnosed carefully. A thorough look into his background may also go a long way towards explaining his behavior, however, as we do not have access to that data, this study will have to be conducted looking at the present symptoms (Gladwell, 2006, pp.65-87).

Nurses are an important part of the patient emergency management procedure. They are ideally positioned to understand and asses an intricate range of psychosocial issues which arise is such emergency situations, as in Rogers case. It is crucial for nurses to comprehend emotional reactions of patients towards emergencies, respond effectively and support patient recovery by means of evidence based approach conducted through individual, family and social perspectives (Hobfoll, 2007, pp.35-41).

In Rogers case, such intervention will serve to focus on his safety, empowerment and hope for the future through active listening and promotion of social connectivity and positive psychosocial interaction which refers to the way complex social and psychological interaction impacts a patients mental health, that of familial units as well as communities (Frampton et al, 2009, pp.121-129).
