Character Analysis - Train to Pakistan

Introduction

Train to Pakistan is not a historical novel. It is true that develops in a very definite historical context (and brilliantly exposed, it must be said), but Khushwant Singh does not care so much religion, history or politics as the way they affect people. Train to Pakistan is a novel that talks about concrete and simple people, and what happens when they reach the flames of the burning of the collective madness. The novel is about how to stay calm in extreme situations and especially, about how little can one trust the neighbor of a lifetime in one of these extreme approaches.

Khushwant Singh wrote Train to Pakistan after witnessing himself the unfortunate events in the Punjab during the summer. Knowing that how easy it is to light the fuse of hatred and intransigence and how terribly easy it is to get those who were neighbors for generations to kill in cold blood to each other, Singh wrote this wonderful novel away from the large numbers of humanitarian tragedies and leads to the house of exile in the night to pick up quickly what little they have and get on with his family to a military truck to an unknown destination (Khushwant, 1961).
