Introduction

“Train to Pakistan” was written by Khushwant Singh, and originally published in 1956. Characters, allusions, pieces, bits and ideas of story float all over the book. Partition of South Asia which has left several wounds in the hearts of many Indians and those dreadful days that still impact the modern India, the reminiscences of that heartbreaking era still makes people shudder, and Khushwant Singh again brought the tragic period alive through Train to Pakistan.

Discussion

In novel of Singh, there are number of characters that play a vital role during these tough times. Though, the writer does not blame a single group of people is to blame, Muslims argued the Hindus had started and planned the human killing. However, the Hindus laid the blame on the Muslims. In reality both Muslim and Hindus killed each other. Both stabbed and shot, and clubbed and speared. Similarly, raped and tortured. In the novel, the characters are located in a fictitious village named Mano Majra, and setting the story located on the frontiers of India and Pakistan. Muslim and Sikh lived in this fiction village. The circumstances in the village are incredibly dissimilar from those occurrences outside. In Mano Majra, the Sikhs and Muslims lived in a peaceful manner. But, they are vulnerable to the information conveyed to them by the outer villages' people (Singh, 2006, pp. 25-201).

The story mainly roams around an illusory village “Mano Majra” situated along the frontiers. The story starts with a dramatic portrayal of how the village was look like.
