Introduction

The owner of Charles River Bridge Company built the bridge into the Charles River in 1785. It is used to link Charleston to Boston. A toll bridge was placed on for forty years under the company charter issued by the State of Massachusetts. The bridge opened on June 17, 1786. In 1792, the toll has been extended to seventy years. The state has issued another charter company in 1828 to build a bridge with only a toll until the owners have even or made a small profit, called the Warren River Bridge.
