English settlers in Virginia buy 20 Africans from a Dutch ship. The Africans were traded as indentured domestics, not slaves. The distinction being an indentured domestic may finally become free for employed for some number of years.

1641

Massachusetts Bay Colony legalizes slavery.

1660

Virginia legalizes slavery.



1663

Maryland becomes the first colony to enact regulations that identify slavery for life. Under former English regulation slaves who became Christians were conceded freedom.

1667

Virginia passes a regulation revoking the former English regulation that permitted for slaves that altered to Christianity to become free.
