The Barriers to Communication in a Company

Whatever the size of the company and its industry is, communication contributes to the achievement of its objectives, and it improves the quality of products and services, promotes motivation, contributing to employee loyalty and creates value shared. There are communication problems specific to the company, namely: structural problems and other socio-cultural (Wood, 2007).

Obstacles Related to the Structure

Business operation requires a horizontal and vertical division of labor (notion of Adam Smith) which created entities in the business of management necessary for the differentiation that sees problems coordination and communication. Besides this, other problems related to firm size is also critical, the larger the company is growing tendency to become bureaucratic and structural problems are increasing (light control, slow communication, lack of filtering), i.e. focus on formal written communication, direct communication and relational language) (Deetz, 2005).

Socio-Cultural Barriers

This category of obstacles reference to considerations of human communication in a company which originates from the lack of analysis of the composition of the employee, the examinations of the various business functions, modes of communication and acceptable level of language, hence the necessity of trade unionism that protects the interests of employees. Thus, conflicts of power and strategies of leaders to keep their flexibility create communication problems. In short, the culture of the organization is effective communication (Erez, 2002).

The topics most requested by employees concerning the financial and asset situation of the company and its competitive position but, what their concerns more directly is their rights, internships, training, wage policy, the work organization, the movement of staff (hiring, terminations, and changes). Employees want a professional, but the seriousness is often top secret. While most executives recognize, that there is no strategic or confidential information. Thus, the conditions under which employees are informed are not fixed in the agreement and pay specific communication topics of interest to the employee no longer practiced (Drucker, 2004).

Obstacles related to the Conduct of Communication

Freedom of expression, even if it is considered beneficial by managers see desirable, is often incompatible with the deep structures of the enterprise: the internal communication can be boosted without altering the practices specific to the own company representation (leaders seek to alter the management of others) (Roy, 2010).
