Introduction

Police patrolling is the particular activity which involves armed policemen and policewomen moving within an assigned region or area. The aim of this activity is to enforce laws and ordinances. The controlling of mobs and crowds, to regulate traffic, prevention of crime and arresting of law breakers is included in their job. This is the key element in carrying out police activities. Police usually patrol through vehicles like cars and bikes or foot patrol is also done (Makowsky, 2006).

The exercise of police patrolling is not only limited to controlling of crime but also to reduce fear within the people from any criminal activity or any kind of fear within a neighborhood. The aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of communication and motivation for efficient patrol operations. Patrolling has been proved to be an effective activity in catching up the crimes or the unlawful things going on within the specific area which helps the department of police at its best. In order to achieve success, efficient communication strategies are adopted by the patrolling officers (Makowsky, 2006).

Police department is dominated by the patrol activity from the early 1800s. Police in uniform patrol the streets for the prevention of crime, to break off crimes which are in progress, and to catch, detain and arrest criminals. To make it more effective the department of police adopted proactive strategies. Patrol is the most important unit in a police department. In metropolitan areas, specific units are set to deal with the special and specific types of problems. Patrol police plays a significant role in performing many tasks which are the duties of the police department. When we talk about patrol officers the team has a deal of issues to handle with. But there are some specific areas of duties which are performed by patrol police and thus make it a very significant unit for police (Leavitt, 2007).

Communication and Motivation for Efficient Patrol Operations

Effective communication and motivation plays the part of backbone in the functioning of police. It also consumes the most of the resources of police agencies. On patrol, police makes continuous and regular routes through specific areas. Cars are used mostly to patrol because of the efficiency as it can cover more area as compare to foot patrol. But the effects of foot patrol are positive in a way that they make citizens less fearful of crime and the attitude of the citizens seems to be improved by foot patrol.

The cars of police moving randomly on the roads of the city create a feeling that the police are everywhere and keeping an eye on things going on. The effectiveness of communication and motivated patrolling officers can be identified by the duties performed by the patrol and the effects of those duties on maintaining law and order of the specific area.
