Introduction

Globalization on one hand has expanded the opportunities for firms to penetrate in international markets but on other hand has given birth to numerous challenges. Success of an organization depends on how well it manages itself in uncertain situations by properly communicating the message. Advancement in communication field has opened new platforms of thinking for organizations in culturally diverse global workplace. Today, we have access to numerous electronic gadgets to fulfill our communication needs. However, effective communication is still a major issue in current business environment. It is essential to determine the need of communication with respect to channel adopted so as to meet the purpose of communication effectively (Bannon, 2003). Expansion of business operations, involvement of culturally diverse people in business and penetration in global markets has given birth to many skeptical issues related to communication.

One of the major challenges in culturally diverse global workplace is cross-cultural communication. It encompasses dimensional issues related to frame of reference, language, emotions, tone of voices, and role of symbols. Cross-cultural communication appears to be a significant challenge as it involves lateral thinking approach to manage the effectiveness of communication in different context. Different factors contribute towards enhancing the challenge level. Inability to understand, lack of trust, incapacity to manage situation sensitivity, and inability to comprehend implicit meanings result in escalating the cross-cultural communication problem (Norales, 2006).

Cross-cultural communication challenge in business communication entails significant advantages and considerations to convey the purpose of communication. Internal cohesion of communication messages with the proper interpretation present the effective viewpoint to the receiver of message (Alatis, 1994). Mainly in business context, effectiveness of cross-cultural communication defines how well business can persuade its objectives.

Workplace diversity has resulted in expanding the thinking horizon of the company and enabling company to explore new dimensions by the perceptive approach of its employees. Strictly emphasizing on the corporate objectives, workplace diversity requires active management of communication between department member working at different layers or in multiple geographic location but at same layer (Krizan, 2007). This increase in diversity has opened new platforms for business entities to meet the needs of customers belonging to different cultural background, having different language, and completely different lifestyle to perceive and interpret things.
